Petition to PolyU: PolyU should respect the Intelligence and Ethics of PolyU's Students and Staff involved in the Protests

As students of PolyU, it is with great sadness and dismay that we read the recent letter "Let us go for a constructive dialogue" on the 2nd of October from the administration referencing the current protests in Hong Kong supporting democracy. The letter repeats the same tropes offered by the Beijing government. Indeed we should all be concerned for our safety when the police force is used as an organized tool of intimidation and repression against law-abiding citizens of Hong Kong. But, it is our opinion that a mature and future-oriented institution such as PolyU should be supporting the courage and commitment of the protestors, not blaming them for the actions of the oppressors. There have been years of dialogue to plan for universal suffrage as stipulated in Article 45 and Article 68 of the Basic Law, resulting most recently in five months of public comment on the "Consultation Document on the Methods for Selecting the Chief Executive in 2017 and for Forming the Legislative Council in 2016". The will of the Hong Kong people to have genuine universal suffrage (including nomination without government vetting) has been categorically denied by the Beijing government and the Hong Kong SAR Administration. As a result it is disingenous at the very least to suggest that the protestors need to engage in "rational and constructive" dialogue. The only apparent recourse of the people, lacking direct legislative means to self-determination, and with rational and constructive dialogue emphatically rejected by the Beijing government, is to engage in non-violent civil disobedience. We urge the administration of Hong Kong Polytechnic University to respect the intelligence and ethics of its students and staff. History will judge who sides with self-determination and who sides with oppression. Sincerely A group of Students and Alumni of PolyU
